Requirements January 1952 until June 1972
1. (a) Prepare or read correctly plans for a permanent, useful masonry structure such as a wall, small dam, outdoor fireplace or trash burner. (b) Mark out the site on the ground, dig a foundation trench, and pour a foundation of solid concrete mixed by yourself. (c) Prepare mortar correctly. (d) Using a mason's tools correctly, complete the structure.
2. Point out examples of coursed ashlar, random ashlar and rubble construction.
3. Do any three of the following projects:
a. Lay a stepping stone or flagstone walk.
b. Build a useful concrete structure, such as a wall, small dam pond, floor, sidewalk or post.
c. Design and mold in a form an ornamental concrete object, such as a bird bath, window box, garden seat or sun dial.
d. Make major repairs in a masonry structure.
e. Build a useful, dry masonry structure, such as an outdoor fireplace, incinerator or grease trap.
f. Plaster or stucco a wall or ceiling.
g. Visit a rock quarry or a factory where cement, brick, tile, concrete block or other masonry material is made. Observe and report on operations from beginning to end.
h. Find out what life work opportunities there are in masonry and allied trades. Choose one specific job in which you are interested and report on the qualifications you must have for the job, and what the working conditions are.
