Requirements January 1965 until November 1965

1. Discuss the qualities of hardwood and softwood that are related to wood carving and give the reasons for your choice of the wood used in Requirements 5 and 6.

2. Name several types of sharpening stones and tell how they are used. Describe five wood-carving tools and their use.

3. Show how to sharpen a pocketknife and other tools used in wood carving, using a sharpening stone and a "slip stick" sharpener that you have made.

4. Demonstrate the safety principles for using a pocketknife and special wood-carving tools.

5. Plan and carve in the round a simple object such as a neckerchief slide, a totem, an animal figure, a kachina doll, or a letter opener. Smooth and finish the object so it is ready for stain or paint.

6. Plan and carve an appropriate design in low relief on some simple object such as bookends, a plaque, a tray, a chest, or a box. Smooth and finish the object for staining.

Requirements November 1965 until June 1972

2. Do the following:

(a) Describe five wood-carving tools and their use.

(b) Describe several types of sharpening stones and tell how they are used.

(c) Show how to sharpen a pocketknife and other tools used in wood carving using a sharpening stone and a "slipstick" sharpener that you have made.

3. Demonstrate the safety principles for using a pocketknife and special wood-carving tools.
